SEO is Search Engine Optimization. Why should you care? Because that is how search engines find you, and how those same search engines decide where you should be placed on the page when someone searches for you. It is basically a popularity contest. If you are popular, when someone searches for you, you will be on the first page. If you aren’t popular, you will be on the second, or third, or fourth, or maybe the fifth page.
Why is that important? Because most people, when they search for something, do not go past page 1. If you are on page 2, you will not be seen. And, if you are not seen, no one will click on your link.
There are many ways to work with SEO. And most of the search engines have already figured out how they can be manipulated, and figured out how to make their engine non-manipulated. Why? It’s all based on the reputation of the search engine. If one search engine has a reputation of being honest, reliable, consistent, or many other positive attributes, that search engine will be used more than other engines. And that search engine will be able to demand higher click-through fees, advertising fees, etc. And more fees means more profits.
The best search engines provide advantages for the searcher and those who are being searched for. Better SEO results in better searches. The most successful web-based enterprises have the best SEO. And, some of the biggest failures have had some very bad SEO.
