To Follow or Not to Follow on Twitter, That is the Question

When was the last time you checked your Twitter account to compare the number you are following to the number who are following you?

Every account you are following shows up on your home page as a tweet, while every account that follows you shows up on their home page as a tweet, when you send out a tweet.

Before I did a little Twitter housecleaning, I was following 1943 Twitter accounts, but only 1870 were following me (on #authors_club only).

That meant 73 accounts were feeding me advertizing, but were not accepting my advertizing.  They were advertizing for free.

The best suggestion I’ve read for Twitter accounts, is to check your following list a minimum of once a month.  If you’re following someone who’s not following you, unfollow them.

Another tip about Twitter I recently read was only follow specific accounts that relate to your account.  For example:  as an author, I should be following other authors, not welders or auto mechanics.   Yes, welders or auto mechanics might also be authors, but generally not.

Relating to maintaining a legitimate Twitter following, I’m sure you’ve seen the advertizements for purchasing followers.   Don’t spend your money.  Yes, you get more followers, but the majority have nothing to do with your Twitter account.  It would be similar to the auto mechanic attempting to style hair out of his garage.

Twitter is an excellent advertizing platform, if it is used correctly.
