The Cost of Doing Business, a Post by R. Clint Peters

I recently subscribed to “Square”, the gizmo I can use to receive debit and credit card payments using my tablet.  Why do I, as an author, need the opportunity to receive payments when my books are sold through Amazon, who collects the money and deposits it into my account?

First, my business plan is evolving.  I have tons of stuff left over from a thirty-year career as an electrician.  I am trying to hold a yard sale a couple times a month.  I plan to sell autographed first-edition books at my yard sale.   Giving the buyer the ability to pay for the book with a credit card is good for my business plan.

Second, I have several items at my yard sale that are priced far above pocket change.  (For example, a sheep skin jacket valued at over $300.00 for less than $100.00)  If the potential buyer can use a card, some of these items might be sold.

Third, I am no longer locked into PayPal.  I have three sales sites on the Internet.  Until “Square”, I was forced to use PayPal for transactions.  Now, I can take phone orders.

Yes, there is a fee for every time I use “Square”, but, that is the cost of doing business.  And 2.75% of something that actually sells is better than 2.75% of no sale.
