Some Thoughts on Reciprocal Linking, a Post By R. Clint Peters

I was recently asked what I thought about reciprocal linking, if it actually works.

First, what is reciprocal linking?  Reciprocal linking is simple.  You put a link to my blog in a prominent spot on your blog, and I put a link to your blog on my blog (or website). When someone visits your blog, they will see my link, and possibly come visit my blog.  If someone visits my blog, they will see your link(s), and off they go to look at your blog.

Why is reciprocal linking important?

First, it proves to your readers that you are not standing alone in the middle of an empty field, that there are other bloggers who might share your ideas.  It is how you gain credibility. If you are the only one with an idea, you might be blogging only to yourself.

Second, reciprocal linking provides access to your blog that may not be available under your normal blogging practices.  If you are blogging to specific followers, they are often the only group likely to see your blog.  If you have a link on another blog, those who are interested will come to you.

One important fact to remember with reciprocal links is that the description will make or break the linkability.  The description in the banner for The Book Reviewers Club blog states that the club is “the FREE place where books find readers, and readers find something FREE to read”.  On a reciprocal link, the description for The Book Reviewers Club blog might be “Where books find readers, and readers find books”.  It is catchy, it is short, and it clearly tells the reader what the blog is about, and even why they should click on the link.

I have some links on this blog, under Important Blogs to Follow (on the right side of the blog).  Some are not reciprocal because they have not yet read the blog.  Take a look, and see if there are blogs that you consider important enough to take a look at.  You will not be sorry.
